If you were born between these dates, you were born in a Ji-Wei year, the Year of the Goat, and General Fu Dang watches over you.
(A new year starts on Lunar New Year’s Day.)
Double earth, double care
Ji and Wei are both yin earth: soft, rich soil and the late summer field quietly storing up the harvest, like a mother preparing for a new baby. Together they make one of the most generous, nourishing pairings of the cycle.
General Fu Dang guards this year. People born in Ji-Wei years often have an instinct to look after others and make warm, comfortable spaces. They are generous and are often the ones who say, "Don't worry, you can lean on me."
Open arms
He is broad, with a round face that is both strong and kind, the look of someone who will be there if you need him. Behind his thick brows, his eyes are full of acceptance.
He wears colorful heavy armor with gold shoulder plates and a red cloak, holding a thick staff level across his body like open arms: "Come on in. There's room for you here."
Soup kitchens
According to legend, he was Fu Dang, born into a wealthy Ming dynasty family, who saw as a child how hard life was for the poor and promised himself he would help one day.
Then came years of drought and flood, and many families had nothing left to eat. Fu Dang did not wait for government aid. He opened his granaries and had his workers set up soup kitchens, feeding hundreds of people every day. His wife worried: "At this rate, we'll run out." He said, "Money can be saved again. A life, once lost, is gone."
"Keep it for the children"
His fortune shrank a lot that year, but nobody in the area starved. In later good years, families he had helped brought him produce as thanks. He never accepted it: "Keep it. Save it for your children."
Heaven named him the Tai Sui of the Ji-Wei year. Open arms and a generous heart: that is his gift to everyone born in the Year of the Goat.
