If you were born between these dates, you were born in a Geng-Wu year, the Year of the Horse, and General Wang Ji watches over you.
(A new year starts on Lunar New Year’s Day.)

A horse under the noon sun

Geng is yang metal, a sword fresh out of its sheath. Wu is the horse at noon, when the sun is at its strongest and the horse runs free. Fire tempers metal, and the more it burns, the finer the blade.

General Wang Ji guards this year. People born in Geng-Wu years are often talented, free-spirited, and at their best when they can run full speed at something they truly love.

Easy grace

He wears a dark teal hat and a golden orange robe the color of noon light, with a red cape over his shoulders. His face is round and friendly, with a quiet kind of nobility.

In his raised right hand is a small scroll, a sign that he moved easily between books and battle. He looks as if he is only resting for a moment and could leap onto a horse at any time.

The nobleman and his thirty horses

Wang Ji was a real nobleman of the Jin dynasty, the son of the famous general Wang Hun. He married Princess Changshan, the daughter of Emperor Wu.

According to the stories, he kept more than thirty fine horses and cared for each one himself, as if they were close friends. When he rode, man and horse moved as one. He was also a fine calligrapher, a poet and a skilled archer.

What people loved most was his open heart. All kinds of people came to his door, and he welcomed every one of them politely, never judging anyone by their family.

Bright and brief

He died before his time, and the emperor grieved deeply. Like the noon sun, his life was strong, pure and held nothing back. Heaven named him the Tai Sui of the Geng-Wu year.

A scroll in his hand and talent held high: that is his gift to everyone born in the Year of the Horse.
