(A new year starts on Lunar New Year’s Day.)
Sunlight and a watchdog
Bing is the noon sun that shows everything as it is. Xu is the dog at dusk, standing at the door with every sense alert. Sunlight lets the dog see every hidden danger, and loyalty gives the light a warm heart.
General Bai Min guards this year. People born in Bing-Xu years are often open and direct, bad at scheming, and quick to say "that's not right." They stay loyal to the people and causes they believe in.
You won't fool him
His hair is in a neat high knot. He has a square face, a short beard and a thin goatee, and clear eyes that say, "I see exactly what's going on."
He wears a light blue robe and a heavy red cloak. His left hand is raised, palm out, in a clear "stop." You do not back off because he threatens you. You back off because you know he will never give in.
The guard who guarded against guards
According to legend, he was Bai Min, an officer in the Ming dynasty's imperial guard, a force with a dark reputation for bullying ordinary people. From his first day, Bai Min chose another way: he reported colleagues who used the badge to rob the people.
His bosses hinted more than once that if he just looked the other way, he would rise fast. Every time, he chose the harder road. He reported seven corrupt colleagues, each with full records and witnesses they could not deny.
"I sleep fine at night"
In the end, a blunt report angered a well-connected superior, and Bai Min was sent off to a remote post. As he left the capital, he said, "Everything I did, I could say out loud in daylight, and I can sleep at night. That's enough."
Heaven named him the Tai Sui of the Bing-Xu year. A raised palm and an honest, loyal heart: that is his gift to everyone born in the Year of the Dog.
