If you were born between these dates, you were born in a Xin-Si year, the Year of the Snake, and General Zheng Dan watches over you.
(A new year starts on Lunar New Year’s Day.)

A snake made of fine steel

Xin is yin metal, a finely sharpened edge or a thin beam of light through fog. Si is the snake that lies still and misses nothing, then moves fast and true. Together they are calm on the surface and razor-sharp underneath.

General Zheng Dan guards this year. People born in Xin-Si years often look unbothered but think very deeply, and they rarely take things at face value.

Hard to read, easy to trust

He wears no grand hat, just his hair tied up. His face is lean, with a thin goatee and eyes that seem to be reading something invisible. His half-smile is hard to read, yet it makes you feel safe.

He wears a deep blue robe and a warm yellow cloak, like a lamp suddenly appearing in a dark valley. His hands rest at his sides. He is perfectly still, and you sense he could surprise you at any moment.

Tea first, bitter then sweet

According to legend, he was Zheng Dan, a Song dynasty envoy who was not a great talker but noticed everything: the pauses in a speech, the seating plan, even whether the tea was hot or cold.

He was sent to settle a tense border dispute. The other side made huge demands, and everyone expected the talks to collapse. After the shouting, Zheng Dan simply sipped his tea and said, "Your autumn tea is bitter at first and sweet at the end. Perhaps these talks will be the same."

The other envoy understood: I am in no hurry, and what will bring us together is shared interest, not who is louder. The talks ended in an agreement both sides could live with.

No fuss

Back home, he wrote a few short lines in his report and went back to his desk. Heaven named him the Tai Sui of the Xin-Si year.

A quiet stillness and a mind that sees far: that is his gift to everyone born in the Year of the Snake.
