If you were born between these dates, you were born in a Geng-Xu year, the Year of the Dog, and General Ni Mi watches over you.
(A new year starts on Lunar New Year’s Day.)
A hidden blade and a loyal dog
Geng is yang metal, a sharp, clean blade. Xu is the dog at dusk, still standing guard as night falls. A blade with loyalty: principled, steady and not to be moved.
General Ni Mi guards this year. People born in Geng-Xu years often do not show off, but they turn out to be the most dependable person in the room when it matters, and they protect the people they care about without making a fuss.
Easy to overlook
He is round and broad-faced, calm and plain-looking, nothing like the fierce generals around him. You might overlook him. That is the point: like metal buried in earth, the edge is hidden until it is needed.
He wears dark robes and a red cloak and holds an object in both hands as if everything is already under control.
"Always keep a copy"
According to legend, he was Ni Mi, a clerk in a Ming dynasty county office for forty years. He watched officials come and go and saw many attempts to bend justice. He had no power to decide anything, but in his own small way he kept things fair.
He had an incredible memory and never let anyone escape responsibility by saying "I don't remember." Once a powerful landlord bribed someone to steal a witness statement that hurt his case. Ni Mi heard about it, and the night before, he quietly copied the statement and hid the copy. The next day the original had been tampered with, but the complete copy appeared in court, and the landlord's plan fell apart.
Quiet loyalty
He never told anyone. Afterward he just said to the magistrate, "I always keep a copy."
Heaven named him the Tai Sui of the Geng-Xu year. Quiet strength and loyalty that holds: that is his gift to everyone born in the Year of the Dog.
