If you were born between these dates, you were born in a Bing-Wu year, the Year of the Horse, and General Wen Zhe watches over you.
(A new year starts on Lunar New Year’s Day.)
Double fire
Bing is the noon sun, and Wu is the horse at noon. Both are yang fire, so this is the brightest, warmest pairing in all sixty years, light on light and warmth on warmth, enough to light hope even on bare ground.
General Wen Zhe guards this year. People born in Bing-Wu years often inspire others with their words, throw everything into what they believe in, and instinctively look for the light in any darkness.
Pen and sword in balance
He wears a finely layered, patterned hat and a neat beard. His lean face has a scholar's calm, and his clear eyes see straight to the heart of things.
He wears a deep blue robe with wide sleeves like a night full of stars, and a bright yellow cloak, two fires burning on a deep background.
Schools before walls
History books do not record his life. In the Tai Sui tradition this channel follows, he was a scholar-official at the very end of the Five Dynasties, after years of war had left people with little schooling and little hope.
His first act was not to repair walls or train soldiers. He reopened the public school and invited good teachers from everywhere. He held open lectures in the rebuilt markets that anyone could attend, and poetry contests at festivals so people could find words for what they had lived through.
A name and a sentence
Most moving of all was a memorial he held after a disaster. He asked each survivor in the square to say the name of someone they had lost, and one sentence about them. All afternoon, names filled the square. He believed that people who lose their memory of the past lose their footing for the future.
Heaven named him the Tai Sui of the Bing-Wu year. A scholar's light and a warm, bright heart: that is his gift to everyone born in the Year of the Horse.
