Hello, I’m the Sleepy Immortal
Old fortune poems, old stories, and a little company.
An immortal who sleeps. A lot.
In old Chinese stories, the wisest immortals are often napping under a pine tree while everyone else rushes around.
I like that idea. So this place has one simple wish for you: eat well, sleep well, live well, and stop wearing yourself out from the inside.
Why these stories
I grew up in Taiwan, where temples are part of everyday life. People go there to pray, to ask for advice, or just to sit in the incense smoke and breathe.
One of the oldest things you can do there is draw a fortune stick. You hold a bamboo cup of numbered sticks, ask your question quietly, and shake it until one falls out. That number leads you to a poem.
When I started reading these poems closely, I fell in love with them. Behind each one is a story: emperors and poets, brave women, foolish generals, lovers who waited a lifetime. Most people outside the Chinese-speaking world never get to hear them, so I'm telling them to you, one by one.
A little about me
A few years ago, I went through a long, hard time. There were days when getting out of bed felt like climbing a mountain.
What helped me was something quite ordinary: kind people who stayed with me, small steps, like five minutes of sunshine a day, and stories. I was carried through by kindness. Now I'd like to pass a little of it on.
Is this a religious channel?
Not at all. The way I see it, the power of faith is really the power of believing in yourself. These gods and poems are like old friends who give good advice. You can listen, and you still get to choose.
Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish, no religion at all, or still figuring it out: you are welcome here. Whatever you believe, I hope it brings you back to kindness, to others and to yourself.
A fortune is a reminder, not an order
If you draw a bad fortune, the sky is not going to fall on you. Think of it like a weather forecast. “Chance of rain” doesn't mean stay in bed all day. It means bring an umbrella.
Every poem is a story with lots of characters. You don't always have to be the hero. Sometimes the lesson is hiding in the sidekick.
Hello, Sleepies
If I'm the Sleepy Immortal, then you, my friend, are a little sleepy too. So you're my Sleepies. It's a compliment. It means you know how important a good nap is.
Questions people ask
Is The Sleepy Immortal a religious channel?
No. It is a storytelling channel about Chinese fortune poems and the stories behind them. Everyone is welcome, whatever they believe.
Does a bad fortune mean bad luck?
No. A fortune poem is a reminder, not an order. Think of it like a weather forecast: it tells you to bring an umbrella, not to stay in bed.
What is a Chinese fortune stick?
At many temples in Taiwan you shake a bamboo cup of numbered sticks until one falls out. The number leads you to a short poem, and every poem has a story behind it.
Eat well, sleep well,
and be kind to yourself.
